Three Cheers for Activity Professionals!
Keeping older adults who reside in communities inspired, energized and engaged takes a truly special professional. This profoundly important responsibility is one that is tackled each and every day by Activity Professionals. As National Activity Professionals Week is approaching, we want to say a heartfelt thank you for everything you do!
From January 21-27, we have the opportunity to celebrate National Activity Professionals Week or NAPW. By providing a holistic and person-directed approach to caring for our older adults, Activity Professionals play an essential part of ensuring that communities are infused with meaningful activities including art therapy, exercise, music and outings.
Whether a loved one resides in assisted living, independent living, memory care or a nursing home, they will have the opportunity for enrichment through their interaction with the work that Activity Professionals create. The enthusiasm and dedication that activity coordinators and social care practitioners exhibit each and every day is nothing short of extraordinary. Their efforts provide residents a well rounded and elevated quality of life.
To truly understand the scope of work that Activity Professionals do, let’s delve into the definition of an activity. This would involve anything other than routine tasks of daily living that enhances a resident’s sense of well-being as well as promotes cognitive, physical and emotional health. Activities encourage a state of living instead of just existing. These include activities that promote:
- Comfort
- Education
- Creativity
- Success
- Self-esteem
- Independence
- Pleasure
Staying active as we age is helpful to stave off depression and loneliness but the physical effects are also real. Exercise as well as engaging in activities help older adults to manage health conditions like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and obesity.
Thank you to all of the Activity Professionals who keep older adults thriving. You inspire us with your creativity and commitment.
