Stay Social

July is Social Wellness Month. Staying engaged to a network of supportive friends and family members carries many benefits, especially to help mitigate loneliness.  With life changes, illness, and loss as universal themes of aging, many seniors find themselves struggling with depression and anxiety.  According to the World Health Organization, over 20% of adults over the age of 60 are dealing with a mental or neurological disorder.

Though mental health should be a priority at each and every stage of life, it is especially important for seniors to have a support system of friends and family who are consistent in their lives.  It is essential to be aware of the potential red flags that a senior is struggling.

The National Institute of Mental Health has compiled a list of universal symptoms that impact seniors who may be struggling with their mental health.  These symptoms can include:

*Changes in sleeping or eating patterns
*Ongoing headaches, pain, or digestive issues
*Worry, anger, irritability, or aggressiveness
*Changes in mood or energy level
*Compulsive behavior or obsessive thoughts
*Hopelessness or sadness
*Engaging in high-risk activities

By maintaining a strong connection to loved ones, seniors can enjoy a better quality of life.  Having support to vent concerns, share the good times, and rely on when assistance is needed, older adults can thrive.  In cultivating these relationships, there is an elevation in confidence and better moods as well as improved cardiovascular function and lower stress levels.
