Get Moving!
By CarePatrol of Baltimore
The facts are in and the Surgeon General’s Report concludes that the “loss of strength and stamina attributed to aging is in part caused by reduced physical activity.” Increased strength and stamina are only the beginning of the benefits you will reap by engaging in regular exercise. Seniors who engage in regular physical activity can also reduce the risks associated with arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, depression, hypertension, cancer, dementia and overall quality of life.
So what’s your first move? Older adults should always consult with their physician before beginning a new physical activity program. Your physical activity doesn’t have to be overly strenuous to be beneficial. After you get the green light from your physician, you might consider consulting a fitness instructor who specializes in senior training – they can help you design a fitness plan that you can manage and enjoy.
Next move? Find a friend. Exercise is much more fun and you are more likely to keep to your exercise plan if you have a scheduled time with a friend. Socialization is also a key component to healthy senior living, so double up on your health benefits by walking with a friend!
Let’s Go! The popular slogan used by young people today can also be your new motto as a senior! Whether you are living independently or in a senior living community there are ways for you to start moving and enjoy the many benefits of physical activity. After you get the green light from your physician, get moving! You’ll be happier and healthier!
